Looking for a sweet activity to do with your kids? How about a spot of gardening with a seed starter kit from The Grommet!
I love doing fun activities with my kids on Mother’s Day. This year my daughter Parker, who is in pre-k, started learning about the life cycle of plants. I could tell she was really excited by what she was doing in the classroom so thought it would be a fun thing for us to do together.
My parents weren’t big gardeners but my grandad was. I still remember watching him plant his vegetables. He made the most amazing rhubarb pie from rhubarb that grew in his garden. Some of the other vegetables? Well, my grandparents were from the era where things were, ummm, overboiled! So, I preferred it when he let me eat the vegetables & fruit straight from the garden!
Parker loves flowers. I spotted the cutest little flower seed starter kits on The Grommet with 10 different flower seeds – lovely, bright, fun-colored blooms. There are plenty of seeds each seed starter kit so you have enough for several plantings.
I did NOT receive compensation for this post. I did receive some free products to review. All project ideas and any opinions expressed here are my own. For further information on our disclosure policy please check out our disclosure page.
The packaging for the SproutBrite starter seed kit is the absolute cutest! All the containers, or seed capsules, have gorgeous illustrations of the wild flowers included within and the capsules are “kid-size”. They really enchanted her and got her even more excited about planting, opening the little capsules and picking out the seeds. She plans to keep the empty containers to hold treasures in now!
Within the pack is a beautiful and informative starter pamphlet – this was perfect to reinforce the things she had been learning in the classroom.
There were indoor/outdoor planting instructions, more about seeds, plant parts, planting timing and pairing charts as well as fun facts on why we all need flowers in our life.
Parker was so excited to start planting our cute little seeds, so in the morning we took a quick trip to the local hardware & gardening store.
We bought little a starter growing kit that included pots, seed soil mix and a cover so we could plant the seeds and create an indoor greenhouse and keep a close eye on the flowers….trust me she will check them daily and more! This is now hers and she is excited to have her own little garden to tend and flowers to keep alive.
When it came to planting the seeds from the seed starter kit, the pamphlet was a fun way for her to take charge of the order in which we planted. It has information on the significance of the flowers color. Parker used this to select which flowers we would pick. My favorite bit was the colors and what they mean. I didn’t need much convincing!
She was so fascinated with how the seeds were tucked into the soil and gently added water to get them started.
I can’t wait until the first sign of green pops through the soil!
Now she has a “grown up” responsibility. Her role is helping me water and fertilize the plants, continuing to nurture them. I’m looking forward to the fun of measuring their growth each week.
I’ll be sure to post on our progress as we repot them, learn to weed and create arrangements from the flowers once they are in bloom.
I can’t recommend this activity highly enough. The joy of opening the capsules, feeling the earth through their little fingers, gently tending to the seeds and the excitement for them to grow is simply infectious!
I hope you get as much joy using these starter seed kits as we did. These kits are such a great gift for moms, friends, teachers and more! Check out SproutBrite or The Grommet for lots of fun gifts and activity based gift ideas. Happy planting and have fun!
